As we prepare for our upcoming Conference of Clubs, I am pleased to share an important update on one of our key initiatives for 2026 — the Plant a Mangrove Sapling Program.
This initiative responds directly to the urgent challenges of climate change. Mangroves are critical natural defenders: they protect coastlines from erosion and storms, strengthen marine ecosystems, and store significant amounts of carbon. These benefits are especially meaningful for areas such as Sabah, where coastal communities face increasing environmental pressures.
Our effort also connects with broader conservation priorities in Sabah’s wetland landscapes. For example, the Kota Kinabalu Wetlands — a rich mangrove ecosystem on the Sabah coastline — is recognised internationally as a Ramsar Site of Wetlands of International Importance (Ramsar Site No. 2290) under the Ramsar Convention, highlighting the global value of protecting these habitats.
I am delighted to announce that our Special Mangrove Planting Event will be held on the morning of 3 May 2026 @ Kota Kinabalu Wetlands.. Delegates at the Conference will have the opportunity to participate directly in this hands-on environmental action.
We warmly encourage every Club to sponsor a mangrove sapling for RM200. Each sponsorship allows your Club to leave a meaningful legacy in Sabah’s coastal restoration efforts. An official Certificate of Sponsorship will be issued to recognise your contribution.
