In celebrating International Day of the Girl Child 2025, Soroptimist International of the South East Asia Pacific (SISEAP) proudly stands with the global community to champion the rights, voices, and potential of girls everywhere.

Each year, this day reminds us of the urgent need to remove barriers that prevent girls from realising their full potential and to create spaces where they can thrive as leaders, change-makers, and contributors to society.

The United Nations theme for 2025, “Invest in Girls’ Rights: Our Leadership, Our Well-being,” calls on all of us to recognise that girls are not only beneficiaries of development, but powerful agents of change. When we invest in girls — through education, skills training, mentorship, and safe environments — we invest in healthier communities, stronger economies, and a brighter future for all.

At SISEAP, we remain deeply committed to empowering girls to dream boldly, learn confidently, and lead courageously. Our programmes and advocacy focus on education, leadership development, work readiness, and protection from gender-based violence.

This year, we proudly highlight our Federation Public Speaking Competition, which includes girls aged 12–19 — giving them a platform to speak out, be heard, and lead. Organised in connection with the upcoming International Day of Education in January 2026, this initiative reinforces our belief that education is the foundation for empowerment and equality.

The ability to speak publicly isn’t just a skill; it’s a catalyst for empowerment, leadership, and self-expression. In a world where female voices have often been sidelined, teaching girls the art of effective communication helps them challenge stereotypes, advocate for themselves and others, and inspire change.

Under the theme “Empowered Voices, Sustainable Choices,” young speakers are exploring how individuals and communities can make informed, ethical, and bold decisions that support a more sustainable and equitable future. It also gives Soroptimists the opportunity to hear first-hand the thoughts, dreams, and aspirations of the next generation of women leaders.

By now many clubs have completed their heats for the Federation Public Speaking  Competition and many have been entertained and amazed by the standard and passion of the presentations thus far.

The time is approaching to video their winners and submit these for consideration by the Federation. Please see the link to download the videos.

Together, let us continue to invest in girls — because when girls rise, we all rise.

In solidarity,

Joanne Yeoh
