April Update:  EmpoweHER Futures: Shifting Narratives and Building Dreams in Johor

Every incredible journey begins with a single, courageous step. For ten resilient women from the refugee community in Johor, Malaysia, that step was taken this April as they gathered for the launch of EmpoweHER Futures: Bridging Digital Literacy & Entrepreneurship for Refugee Women & Girls.

Brought to life through the vital funding of the SISEAP Brilliant Futures Fund, this transformative initiative is a collaborative powerhouse spearheaded by Soroptimist International Iskandar Puteri (SIIP) and Cahaya Surya Bakti (CSB). Together, they are laying down sustainable pathways toward true economic freedom, self-reliance, and community leadership.

Iskandar Puteri’s Vision: A Blueprint for Independence

The ultimate goal of the EmpoweHER Futures project is their long term approach, systemic change aligned with global Sustainable Development Goals.

To bridge the gap between systemic legal and economic hurdles and true independence, the project is structured to deliver:

  • Holistic Capacity Building: Equipping 20 participants with essential digital literacy, financial savvy, vocational expertise, and entrepreneurial skills.
  • Peer-Led Sustainability: Training a further 10 women as mentors via a "Train-the-Trainer" track to guarantee that empowerment ripples out to future generations.
  • Tangible Business Launchpads: Moving beyond theory, participants will band into business groups, draft strategic plans, master digital tools (like Canva, Facebook Marketplace, and Blogspot), and receive a $250 USD startup kit to launch real ventures, culminating in an exciting community Market Day and Exhibition!

From Orientation to Action:

While internal constraints and a thoughtful pause to respect the festive periods of Ramadan and Eid Mubarak shifted our start date to April 7, 2026, the momentum since has been nothing short of inspiring. Led by Project Coordinator Nafisah, the cohort has gone headfirst into their foundational phase, meeting twice a week at CSB Kota Tinggi.

Iskandar Puteri has shared with us, their progress in the classroom through these session

Session 1: Laying the Groundwork

The program kicked off with establishing a safe, respectful, and collaborative environment. Participants signed mutual commitment agreements, completed baseline surveys to track their upcoming growth, and confidently shared their unique personal strengths with the group.

Session 2: The Power of "My Story"

Trust is the currency of community. In this session, through an intimate guided activity titled "My Story", the women mapped out their backgrounds, interests, required support systems, and highest aspirations. It allowed the facilitator to spot overlapping passions, setting the stage for future business partnerships.

Session 3: Mapping the Dream

The abstract began taking a concrete shape during Session 3. Utilizing a "Concept Mapping" framework, the women began analyzing their core business ideas, identifying their target audiences, and sketching out potential marketing structures.

Meeting Challenges

Class room training is rarely without obstacles. Navigating life as a refugee in Malaysia means dealing with legal, social, and financial constraints that can heavily cloud long-term planning and chip away at motivation. Furthermore, this cohort reflects diverse educational backgrounds: out of the 10 pioneering women, 3 have limited or no formal literacy.

The tutors recogonise the gaps and will continue to work with the women as a community.

The Power of Community: Rather than slowing down the class, these literacy gaps have unlocked the beauty of peer-led learning. Participants with stronger reading skills are actively stepping up to lift their sisters, proving that we rise by lifting others.

Next Steps: Stepping into the Digital World

Before advancing, the cohort will spend time refining and finalizing their exact business concepts. Once polished, they will cross the threshold into Module 2: Digital Literacy for Life & Business.

This upcoming module will focus on technology, covering everything from phone mechanics and internet safety to navigating WhatsApp Business for localized, small-scale commerce.

Iskandar Puteri Soroptimists are incredibly proud of the profound leaps in confidence and openness observed in just these opening sessions and they see the spark of an empowered community taking their agency back into their own hands.
